Rose Tyler TED/TDD UPDATE!

Part 6: UPDATE! 2012-10-16 17.26.22

This is my first and one of my easiest costumes to wear, so it’s become one of my standbys, useable for any occasion. I used it for the Krewe du Who’s first set of Collector Cards in 2012, which was REALLY fun, and I’ve worn it for Wizard World ComicCon and other events since then.

Since 2012 I’ve learned SO MUCH about costumes, about screen-accurate items and how to find them, followed along with Rose fan groups and fellow cosplayers, and had a lot of time to slowly upgrade this costume. Though I’ve never been as happy with my hair as I was the day of that photo shoot. Those roots took some commitment!

timberlandsI have since acquired most of the SA items from this costume. I traded out my old low-top baby blue Timberland boots for the SA high-top ones, scored on eBay for $25.15 (cheaper than the first pair!). I also picked up a suede & leather shoe cleaning & protection kit from Amazon, for $19.57.
I found info on the SA items from Bad Wolf Closet, the source of all cosplay info related to Rose Tyler (and others).IMG_9905After MUCH eBaying, trial and error with sizes, and switching from the purple to the black to the SA brown versions of the Firetrap Harrie jacket, I finally settled on a medium SA brown version, which I managed to find on eBay for only $31.75, amazingly enough! I also searched and searched for a pair of the SA Oasis jeans in my size, which I eventually found (they may be a different wash, it’s so hard to tell, but again, it took trial and error with the sizes) and spent $50.84 on them, from eBay. They were a long size, and I am SHORT, so I had to shorten them, which I did with the help of a friend and a new sewing machine.

The SA Union Jack t-shirt and undershirt are not IDed, but mine needed an upgrade. I bought a shaping white tank top to wear underneath, on Amazon for $22.89 including shipping. I also bought a new Union Jack shirt, since mine was so faded from wear and wash, for $23.96 on Amazon. This one is unfortunately too long for me, so I will need to shorten it for it to be wearable.

This is a super comfortable costume as long as the weather isn’t too hot, and I love the comfy puffiness of this jacket. Plus it’s easily the  most recognizable “Rose” look out there! Here are a few photos from Wizard World Comic Con 2014 and Dragon*Con 2015:

Note: All costs include shipping. Total ( UPDATED) Cost for this Costume = $185 (not including the leather cleaning kit)

Guardians of the Galaxy: Gamora

In preparation for Dragon*Con this year, our gaming friends decided to put together a group costume. We did a Guardians of the Galaxy/Star Wars mashup, with the concept that we were the GotG characters going to Dragon*Con, dressing up as the Star Wars characters. (Peter made us do it.) Seann, my husband, got Star Lord as his character, because he can totally pull it off. I got Gamora, because I am (a girl) not afraid of body paint. But Gamora is awesome so I was stoked to be her, but immediately panicked at the complexity of her costume… Here goes!

The best resources for overall photos of what Gamora’s outfit is supposed to look like are actual screen caps of the movie (I watched it on my laptop and went crazy with screen caps), plus this gallery and this gallery of the real costumes on display, and honestly, images of the Gamora “action figure” were super helpful for the belt and other details. This post with ALL of Gamora’s outfits is useful as well.

DeviantArt and therpf were incredible resources, as there are some folks who’ve posted long threads about their own costumes there. Here are two found particularly useful:

Prince Ashitaka, Princess Mononoke

For our second Krewe de Fu ball, the theme revolved around anime, and I wanted to put together a costume of San from Princess Mononoke. While he wasn’t obligated to, my wonderful husbad agreed to wear a Prince Ashitaka costume and match me, which was amazing of him! BAM! Couples costume. (see this separate post for info on the San costume) Ultimately, due to family events, we weren’t able to attend the Ball (sad face), so instead we wore them for Halloween later in the year instead.

Rose Tyler Idiot’s Lantern UPDATE!

For the first iteration of this costume, please see Rose Tyler #2 The Idiot’s Lantern

Part 6: UPDATE! Rose Idiot's Lantern CCS2 JHP

This is seriously one of my favorite costumes to wear. I used it for the Krewe du Who’s second set of Collector Cards in 2013, which was again GREAT fun, and I’ve worn it for Wizard World ComicCon and other events since then.

Since all of that I’ve been working diligently to upgrade this costume. I found an ALT color of the Topshop Moto jacket on eBay that I started to color strip, but then my compulsive eBay habit paid off and I got SUPER lucky and snagged the SA jacket this past March (2015) on eBay UK. I also found an old replica of the dress that OddTogs was selling on eBay back in October, in roughly my size, so I grabbed that, too! It needs some work, since it’s an old version and she hadn’t perfected the sequin methods yet, plus I need to take it in a size and bring up the hem (since I’m a shorty). It was $157, but TOTALLY worth it, since it’s a corseted dress and the pleats and fabric are gorgeous and I love it and I would NEVER be able to make this on my own!

So since I got those two pieces I’ve sold the WHOLE outfit from the previous post, except for the sunglasses (they’re a lighter pink, so they match the new dress), to another Rose cosplayer. Dress, jacket, headband, shoes, pin, and ring ALL sold. I kept the lunchbox of course (because it’s AWESOME), and the fishnets, which are SO worn out I need to throw them out anyway. Plus they’re thigh highs, which I hate anyway, so I bought a new pair of normal fishnets on Amazon for $13.80.

I also needed to replace my ring and my brooch, then. Aiming to go MUCH more SA this time, I did a LOT of searching. I found both on Etsy (seriously, that site is AMAZING for cosplay items that are hard to find). The ring I found is a polymer clay adjustable statement ring, which actually cost me close to $27 (because of shipping from Australia, basically), but I had been searching for a ring since I found the dress and could NOT find something, so FINE. I bought it. For the brooch, which is supposedly a mother-of-pearl brooch, I was again having a hard time. I found a pink MOP flower-shaped “pendant” in the right size on Etsy for $12.49, and I’m working on adding the pin back and a small detail to the center to cover the hole (and attach it through to the pin back). Another Rose cosplayer recently found this pin on eBay, which is a nice find, for about $12 also.

IMG_0800  IMG_0795

Roseearringsref1I also needed new earrings. I re-watched the episode on my computer and took some screen captures for closeups of the earrings, and did a LOT of Internet searches. After WAY too much time, I found a note somewhere saying that they were Mickey of London earrings. I can NOT find that link anymore, though I thought I had Pinned it for sure. 😦 Anyway… I set up an eBay search for earrings with those parameters, and HOLY CRAP I found some not a week later (see photos for comparison – they seem like they are pretty close?), they cost me $21.46 including shipping from the UK. Anyway… Crafty TARDIS has done a DIY version that is really really cute and her instructions are great, she wrote them so they can be duplicated by others. The screen caps here are hers, too.IMG_0799

As of June 2015 I’m still working on two last items for this upgrade: the headband and the shoes. My dress is getting altered in a couple of weeks, so I plan to use a piece of the material from the hem to make the headband myself. My plan for the shoes is to scour thrift stores (including my favorite Red White & Blue) for a nice pair of peep toe heels and make my own DIY version, since the Agent Provocateur “Jessica” SA heels are made of unobtanium and there are some GREAT DIY tutorials out there.

1808roseshoesHere are two examples of DIY versions on the Rose Tyler Costuming & Collecting Facebook Page.

The only other things I need to do is spruce up the bodice of the dress a bit. The replica I found is gorgeous, but it’s used, so it has some signs of wear, and the sequins were glued to the bodice instead of being sewn on, so after being worn and rubbing against the inside of the jacket (I’m assuming), many of them have worn off and are missing, leaving the bodice of the dress a bit bare of sequins in parts. Not a big deal, but it needs addressing. My plan to fix this is to do something relatively easy. I don’t have the time or talent to individually sew sequins on the dress, so I’m looking for a sequined fabric in a color that matches, which I can wrap around and sew to the bodice to cover the current fabric and missing sequins. I think I’ve found one on Etsy that will work well. Once I have that figured out, and the shoes, headband and everything else finished up, I will post another update!

My current plan is to debut the new & improved version of this costume at Dragon*Con in Atlanta in September, so stay tuned for more photos & all the updates afterward! If you will be at Dragon*Con, I’d love to say hi! Leave me a comment or send a message!

Rose Tyler Cosplay Roundup

I’ve done several Rose Tyler costumes from Doctor Who at this point, so I’m creating a post linking all of them together in one place. I’ll also keep it updated with a running list of Rose costumes I have in progress that will get linked once they are available as posts. As an added bonus, I’m throwing in the extra Doctor Who related cosplays I have at the end, for anyone who might also be interested in those.

Rose Tyler #3: The Moment a.k.a. “Bad Wolf”

While she’s not exactly the Rose Tyler we’ve come to know and love, I was still excited to put together Billie Piper’s costume for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, “The Day of the Doctor”. I’ve heard her referred to as “The Moment” and “Bad Wolf”, so we’ll call her that. This costume was a departure from anything I’d done before, so it was a challenge, and the distressed elements added a DIY component that was new to me. Challenge ACCEPTED!

Part 2: Sources of Info & Inspiration

— Of course, Jessica over at Bad Wolf Closet has become my go-to source for all things DW cosplay. She hands-down has the most comprehensive list of IDed (and un-IDed) pieces for nearly every character from the DW reboot, and she’s an amazing Rose cosplayer herself. She’s also a fantastic resource for alts and DIY options, especially when it comes to Rose. So I started with her post on Bad Wolf.

— I decided the key pieces would be the boots, the vest, and the overdress. Those things needed to be fairly accurate, while the others could be a bit less so and you’d still “get it”. One of the hardest things about this costume is how distressed it is, and matching ALL of the various beige/tan/whiteish colors of the pieces. Continue reading

(Femme) Captain Jack Harkness, Doctor Who

When my husband (then fiancé) Seann proclaimed he wanted to put together a Captain Jack costume, my heart got all fluttery. Having not seen Torchwood at the time, I immediately jumped to “You get to wear a uniform! And an ascot!” – and though originally he had planned to do the Torchwood Jack, after a tiny bit of peer pressure, and my mentioning that “everyone does Torchwood Jack”, he/we agreed on doing the costume from Jack’s first appearance in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. My comment on this: “We’d be from the same episode!”

Once we started talking about the costume more, I decided I also wanted to do a Femme version of Jack (Jacqueline? Jackie?) myself. Many of the pieces for Seann’s costume could pull double-duty for mine, and a Femme Jack seemed like GREAT fun! I’m going to smash both Seann’s “traditional” Jack and my Femme Jack into this post, since the process of both happened together, and we share some of the pieces, but I will separate the final cost tallies and some of the “putting it together” details.

Some of the other folks who’ve done this costume… especially in a Femme version.

This breakdown of Captain Jack Harkness costume is fantastically detailed and helpful. It’s of the “Torchwood” Jack, and NOT “The Empty Child”/”The Doctor Dances” Jack we are going for, but the details here about the coat and other pieces are super helpful. There’s also this simpler “How to Dress Like Jack Harkness” piece on BBC.

To make the femme version of the costume even more fun, I decided I wanted to go with a “pinup” Femme Jack, sporting some 40s glam hair, stockings with seams, T-strap heels, bright red lipstick, and a pose to match! I think Jack would approve.  Continue reading
